What is a Drop-Down (Luton) Bed Mechanism?
Lowers a ready-made double bed from the ceiling at bedtime, and out of the way by day.

Common in coachbuilt and van-conversion layouts, a drop-down bed is stored flat against the ceiling and lowered on demand — meaning you get a full-size bed at night without losing living space during the day.
How it works
An electric or gas-strut-assisted mechanism, usually on a simple pulley or scissor-lift system, lowers the bed platform smoothly and locks it at the desired height.
Signs of trouble
- ⚠Won't lower evenly on both sides — check the lifting straps or gas struts for wear
- ⚠Motor (on electric versions) straining or stalling — often a battery voltage issue rather than the motor itself
- ⚠Bed doesn't sit securely at height — treat as unsafe to sleep on until checked
