Why it matters
Rubber seals harden with age and UV exposure, eventually losing their ability to compress and seal properly - one of the most common sources of draughts and damp near the door.
How to do it
- Clean the seal with mild soapy water to remove grit that can cause premature wear.
- Apply a thin coat of silicone seal conditioner or rubber lubricant to keep it supple.
- Check for any splits or flat spots and replace the seal section if found.
How often
Every 3 months, or whenever the seal starts to look dry or dull.
Rough UK cost
£5 - £15 for seal conditioner; £20 - £60 for a replacement seal if needed.
