Why it matters
An awning left out in high wind, or fixtures like an aerial or solar panel with a working-loose bracket, are common causes of expensive damage that a five-minute check would have caught.
How to do it
- Check the awning fabric for tears, mould, or a mechanism that doesn't wind evenly.
- Check roof-mounted fixtures (aerial, solar panel, rooflights) for any visible movement or loose brackets.
- Always retract the awning fully before driving, and before any forecast of strong wind.
How often
Before every trip, and after any period of storage.
Rough UK cost
Free to check; repairs vary from £15 for a bracket to £1,200 for a full awning replacement.
