What is a Habitation Service (Damp Check)?
An annual health check for the 'living' part of the van — the equivalent of an MOT for your habitation systems.
Simplified animation — not to scale.
In plain English
Separate from the base vehicle's MOT, a habitation service checks the gas system, water system, electrics, and — critically — tests for damp at multiple points around the body, since water ingress is the single biggest cause of expensive motorhome repairs.
How it works
A qualified technician runs a gas leak test, checks appliance operation and flueing, tests all 12V and mains circuits, and uses a moisture meter at known problem points (seams, windows, roof fittings) to catch damp before it becomes structural.
Signs of trouble
- ⚠It's been more than 12 months since the last one — this is a preventative check, not a reactive one
- ⚠Any musty smell, soft flooring, or bubbling wallpaper/lining — get it checked without delay
- ⚠Buying second-hand with no service history — a habitation service before or just after purchase is well worth it
£150 – £300 for a full habitation service.
Ballpark only — depends on your van, converter and local labour rates.
