What is a Fire Extinguisher & Fire Blanket?

A small dry-powder or foam extinguisher and a fire blanket are standard safety kit, ideally mounted near the habitation door so you can grab them on your way out, not dig through a cupboard while the hob's alight.
How it works
Extinguishers are pressurised canisters that expel an extinguishing agent when the pin is pulled and the lever squeezed; a fire blanket simply smothers small pan fires by cutting off their oxygen supply.
Signs of trouble
- ⚠Extinguisher pressure gauge in the red zone — replace or have it serviced
- ⚠Extinguisher past its service/expiry date — check the label
- ⚠Fire blanket packaging damaged or opened — replace, as a used or exposed blanket may not perform properly
Rough UK cost
£15 – £40 for a replacement extinguisher; £10 – £20 for a fire blanket.
