What are Fly Screens & Blackout Blinds?

Keeps the bugs out and the morning sun off, without shutting the window entirely.

In plain English

Built into most habitation windows and the door, these pull-down mesh and blackout panels let you have ventilation without the insects, or darkness without the stuffiness.

How it works

A sprung roller mechanism, similar to a household roller blind, holds the mesh or fabric under gentle tension in its track, released and retracted by a cord or handle.

Signs of trouble

  • Won't stay retracted — usually a tired spring in the roller
  • Mesh torn or coming away from its frame
  • Runs off its track — often needs a light clean and re-seating rather than a full replacement
Rough UK cost

£30 – £120 fitted per window for a replacement blind/screen unit.

Ballpark only — depends on your van, converter and local labour rates.
