What is a 3-Way Absorption Fridge?
A fridge with no compressor — it can run on gas, 12V or mains, which is why it needs to be dead level.

Unlike your fridge at home, a motorhome 'absorption' fridge has no moving compressor. It uses heat (from gas, a 12V element while driving, or mains electric) to drive a chemical cooling cycle — which is why it's fitted with an external flue and needs the van parked reasonably level to work properly.
How it works
A mix of ammonia, water and hydrogen circulates in a sealed system. Heat from whichever power source is selected boils the ammonia off, and as it condenses and re-absorbs elsewhere in the circuit, it draws heat out of the fridge box.
Signs of trouble
- ⚠Not cooling on gas but fine on 12V (or vice versa) — points to one specific power source, not the fridge itself
- ⚠Yellowing or a rotten-egg smell near the vents — get it checked promptly, this can indicate a cooling-unit fault
- ⚠Poor cooling when parked on a slope — try to park level, especially overnight
