What is an Inverter?

In plain English

Most appliances you own are built for a three-pin UK plug, not 12V. An inverter takes battery power and converts it into standard mains electricity so you can plug ordinary household gadgets in, even with no hook-up.

A simple analogy

"It's the reverse of a phone charger — instead of turning mains power into something a battery likes, it turns battery power into something your laptop likes."

How it works

Electronics inside the inverter rapidly switch the battery's DC power back and forth to create an AC waveform, then step the voltage up to 230V. Bigger appliances (kettles, hairdryers) need bigger inverters and drain the battery fast.

Signs of trouble

  • Inverter won't switch on — check its fuse and battery voltage first
  • Loud fan noise or shutting down under load — usually overheating or overload
  • It works but the battery drains very quickly — normal, mains-hungry appliances use a lot of power
